wästberg – selected

Wästberg is a Swedish lightning company that has been racking up awards ever since its launch in 2008. In a relatively short time the company has managed to present a number of prolific products in collaborations with renowned designers such as CKR, David Chipperfield, Ilse Crafoord, Inga Sempé, Jean-Marie Massaud, Nendo, and Industrial Facility.

Key to the success of Wästberg has been skilled engineering combined with an exceptionally high aesthetic consistency in their production. In fact, part of the company DNA is a very distinct vision of lighting design, which founder Magnus Wästberg outlined in the form of a manifesto. This DNA is evident throughout the designs of Wästberg’s products, which are as much Wästberg as they are Nendo, CKR, Chipperfield, Massaud or Sempé.

The versatile and diminutive Sempé w153 by Inga Sempé made its debut at the Stockholm Furniture Fair this year and is the 2015 winner of the Form +1 award. The lamp can be used as a table lamp, be clamped to a shelf or mounted on a wall, because of the shade’s magnet construction the light can be adjust in any direction.

Industrial Facility w152, is a design beyond the traditional form and functions of lamps, integrating USB outlets and a power management system. Rather than being “gadgetry” its an “affirmation about how we live” according to the studio.

Rune w151 is the most recent project with frequent collaborator CKR. The three oversized pendants are a contradictory play on the notion of form and function. The pendants size makes them more of spatial elements than simply efficient light sources.
